Respiratory health is an important aspect that needs to be introduced early to children, especially elementary school students. However, learning about the respiratory system is often perceived as boring and difficult to understand, resulting in low interest and comprehension among students. In fact, respiratory diseases remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children in Indonesia.
To address this challenge, Group 3 of class GR-4B, students of the Diploma III Nursing Program at Airlangga University, conducted an educational project titled “Healthy Breath: Fun and Educational Respiratory System Lessons” on April 21, 2025, for children residing at Jl. Saphire I, Graha Bunder Asri, Gresik. This project targeted 4th and 5th grade elementary school students with the aim of improving their understanding of the respiratory system through interactive and enjoyable learning methods.
The activity began with a pre-test to assess the children’s initial knowledge about the respiratory system. Subsequently, participants engaged in various educational activities, such as singing respiratory-themed songs and creating simple teaching models. The children were encouraged to build their own models of the respiratory system, enabling them to grasp the breathing process in a hands-on and creative manner.
Group discussions and question-and-answer sessions also fostered a dynamic learning environment, encouraging the children to actively participate and express their opinions. Upon completion of the entire educational program, a post-test was administered to evaluate the improvement in participants’ understanding.
The evaluation results demonstrated a significant increase in the children’s knowledge of the respiratory system, as evidenced by higher post-test scores. The children became more capable of identifying respiratory organs, their functions, and the breathing process itself. They also exhibited creativity in making teaching aids. The use of songs and demonstrations proved effective in enhancing learning interest and facilitating comprehension of concepts that were previously considered difficult.
The “Healthy Breath” project confirms that an interactive and enjoyable educational approach can enhance elementary students’ understanding of the respiratory system. With the right methods, children not only gain knowledge but also acquire skills and motivation to maintain respiratory health from an early age.
